Sailing Word Definition
Fid a tool used for splicing rope.
Foils the "wings" in the water; centerboard, daggerboard, keel, rudder.
Fore Toward the bow
Forward Toward the bow
Foul (a) to tangle; (b) to violate a racing rule, esp. when involved with another competitor
Fractional Rig a rig whose forestay goes partway up the mast
Freeboard the distance from the deck to the water.
Galley A boat's kitchen
Gennaker An asymmetric spinnaker
Genoa A large head sail that overlaps the main.
Ghost To sail or drift slowly in very light winds
Gooseneck A fitting that attached the boom to the mast.
Goosewing To sail on a run with the mail and jib on opposide sides of the boat; the jib is ofter held out by hand (on dinghies) or with a spinnaker/whisker pole.
GPS Global Positioning System; a electronic device which determines exact latitude, longitude, and elevation using satellite signals.
Guardrails Wire saftey lines that run the perimiter of the boat; also called lifelines.
