          | Sailing Word | Definition |  
            | Abeam | Term indicating the direction 90 degrees from the boat's centerline. |  
            | About | To tack;  "ready about" means ready to tack. |  
            | ACC | Americas Club Class |  
            | Aft | The back of the boat |  
            | Afterguard | The helmsman, tactician and navigator--the big decision makers on the boat. |  
            | Amidships | The middle of the boat |  
            | Astern | The back of the boat |  
            | Backstay | Rigging (generally stainless steel wire) that supports the mast by connecting the masthead to the stern. |  
            | Bail | To take water out of the boat |  
            | Ballast | Weight carried  in the below the waterline to increase stability |  
            | Barberhauler | A second line attached to a jib or genoa to move the clew position more inboard or outboard |
