Definition |
Centerboard |
A retractable foil/plank that is attached to the underside of a dinghy; provides lateral stability when sailing and enables the boat to sail upwind |
Chine |
The intersection of the sides and bottom of the boat; a hard corner running fore and aft where the side of the hull joins the bottom; a smooth/round bilged hull has no chines. |
Clamcleat |
a V shaped piece of hardware that secures a running line. |
Cleat |
Any piece of hardware that secures a line on a boat. |
Close-hauled |
Sailing upwind with the sails sheeted all the way in; sailing as high into the wind as possible. |
Clutch |
Hardware used to secure a line; similar to a cam or clam cleat, but handles higher loads. |
Cockpit |
A recess in the deck of the boat where the tiller is located. Area of the boat where the skipper and most of the crew operate the boat. |
Coffee-Grinder |
Vertical pedestal winch ususally operated by two people. |
Companionway |
The steps/area leading inside the boat. |
Compass |
A magnetic instrument indicating direction by pointing to the magnetic poles of the earth |
Cunningham |
Pulls the luff of the mainsail downwards |
D1 |
The lowest wire supporting the mast from side to side, also referred to as the "lower shroud" |
D2 |
The middle wire supporting the mast from side to side. Also called the primary shroud on a "fractionally" rigged sloop. |
D3 |
The topmost wire supporting the mast from side to side. Known as the cap shroud on a fractionally rigged sloop |
Daggerboard |
A centerboard that is retracted vertically rather than hinged. |
