Spinnaker Pole |
A pole for securing the tack of the spinnaker forward of the mast. |
Splice |
Weaving of the rope fibres to attach ropes together or to other harware; a stronger and more permanent knot. |
Splicing Fid |
A pointed spike used to weave rope into a slpice. |
Sportsboat |
A family of small, high performance keelboat classes; eg Mumm30, Melges 24, J80. |
Spreaders |
Struts that extend horizontally from the mast to the shouds; the spreades push the shrouds outboard. |
Springs |
Also refered to as Spring Tides; the tides with the greatest variation from high to low tide. |
Squall |
An area of strong winds and rain; often as the result of a oncoming thunderstorm. |
Stanchion |
A post that supports the lifelines/guardrails. |
Starboard |
The right side of the boat. |
Stay |
a generic term for rigging that supports the mast fore and aft. |
Stern |
The back of the boat |
Strop |
A loop of rope; used a a temporary attacment for changing of lines sheeting angles. |
Swage |
The process of compressing a metal fitting onto wire rope. |
Swage Eye |
A fitting compressed onto wire rope with a hole that can be pinned/bolted to another fitting; mates well with a swage fork. |
Swage Fork |
A fitting compressed onto wire rope; the "female" fitting that mates with a swage eye or padeye. |
