| Mainsheet |
The line that controls the trim of the mainsail. |
| Marlin Spike |
A metal spike for prying knots apart. |
| Mast |
A verical spar to which sails are attached. |
| Mizzen |
The aftmost sail on a ketch or yawl. |
| Mizzenmast |
The sftmost spar on a ketch or yawl |
| Monohull |
A single hulled boat. |
| Neaps |
Or neap tides--the tides with the least variation from high to low tide |
| OCS |
Acronym for "On Course Side"; a boat who is over the line at the starting signal will be scored OCS. |
| One-Design Fleet |
A group of boats with identical design and construction. |
| Overlap |
Boats on the same tack are considered overlapped if they ore nither cler ahed or clear atern. |
| Padeye |
A piece of harware on a boat for attaching lines or blocks. |
| Painter |
The line used to tow the tender behind a yacht. |
| PFD |
Acronym for Personal Flotatation Device; a lifevest or floatation jacket. |
| Pinch |
Sailing to high and too slow into the wind: higher than close hulled. |
| Plane |
A boat starts planing when she sails fast enough for the hull to lift out of the water and exceed normal (displacement) hullspeed: to skim across the surface of the water. |
